DESCRIPTION: Vortrag von Gedichten is the recitation of a poem from memory. The poem must be selected from the official list of poems (enclosed). In this competition, only verbal expression is allowed. No costumes or histrionics will be allowed. It is therefore imperative that the students use their overall intonation, rhythm and stress to convey the spirit of their poem.
NOTE: Poems can be obtained from the different textbooks and anthologies.
GUIDELINES FOR JUDGES: The judges will have at hand the list of official poems. Judges are requested to set high but reasonable standards, but will keep in mind that the competitors are middle and senior high school students.

1. Overall intonation and rhythm
2. Correct pronunciation and stress
3. Proficiency in handling difficult structures
4. Memorization
5. Poise and eye contact
DESCRIPTION: Students will spell words from a pre-determined list until one competitor is left who will be considered the winner. Students must spell and capitalize correctly, i.e. all nouns must be preceded by "großes..." The alphabet will be reviewed before the competition begins to remind students of the names of the letters in German. All words will be taken from the state adopted texts, Komm Mit and Deutsch Aktuell, Levels 1 and 2. Both pre- and post-Rechtschreibreform spellings will be accepted.
