TO: All German Teachers

FROM: Gabriele Kieren-Moghani, FLTDC Chairperson for German

SUBJECT: Guidelines for the 2006 Stadtweiter Wettbewerb

DATE: Saturday, April 1st, 2006

TIME: 8:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M.

PLACE: Coral Way K/8 Center
1950 S.W. 13 Avenue

This competition provides middle and secondary German students with the opportunity to compete on a school and county-wide basis. It is especially good practice for those students who are planning to attend the state competition.

Please note that this year we are also participating in the same categories as the other language groups.  Read carefully the guidelines and the rules and regulations.

WHO CAN REGISTER?

Any middle or senior high school student whose teacher is a member of FLTDC can register. If you are not yet a member, please send the enclosed membership form to Maria Sierra at Miami Coral Park #7271.

WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES OF COMPETITION?

There are six (8) categories of competition. The oral competitions are impromtu and poetry. The written competitions are vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammar. Additionally, optional categories are: projects, skits, and a spelling bee for levels 1 and 2.

WHICH LEVELS CAN PARTICIPATE?

All levels of German can participate. Levels are 1, 2, 3, 4, Advanced and Native. Native speakers may only participate in the POETRY division. Please refer to the following guidelines:

High School Programs: Students are placed in each level depending on the class they are enrolled in; e.g. German 2 --> Level 2. Students who are in an AP course should be enrolled as Advanced Level.

IS and IE Programs: Students in these special programs are eligible for the following levels, unless they are in the native speaker division:

IS Program: | IE Program:

6th graders Level 3 | Level 1

7th graders Level 4 | Level 3

8th graders Advanced | Level 4

9th-12th graders Advanced | Advanced

SPECIAL STUDENT STATUS: Students who have gained some knowledge of German from outside the classroom. For example, they lived for a short while (less than a year) in Germany or a relative speaks German to them at home. These students will compete at their level, but special status will be considered when judging. Please mark an S next to the student's level.

WHO WILL JUDGE?

There will be a panel of judges for each level and category. The panel will be composed of two (2) judges from the university level, the German speaking community or teachers of German.

AT WHAT TIME ARE THE COMPETITIONS?

Registration is at 8A.M. with orientation following at 9A.M. There are two times for competitions, 9:15A.M. and 10:30A.M. If a student’s oral competition is at 9:15A.M., their written exam will be at 10:30 A.M. and vice-versa. Spelling Bee will begin at 12 P.M., after which there will be a lunch break before the distribution of awards.

ALL PARTICIPATING TEACHERS ARE NEEDED AND EXPECTED TO HELP WITH THE COMPETITIONS.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Fill in the enclosed registration form and mail it to:
